Roof Leaks: Prevention, Detection, and Repair

If your roof is leaking, you’ll want to do something about it pronto. It’s important to act quickly, because if you don’t you could be looking at a much bigger problem even a few weeks down the line. With the rainy season almost upon us it’s important act as quickly as possible, by getting the job done sooner rather than later you’ll be saving money.

Check for leaks on a regular basis in order to avoid bigger problems

It’s always best to check for leaks on a regular basis, and they won’t always be where you expect to find them. Water can seep through anywhere, so look for gaps, look at your ceilings, tiles, and make sure you do this when the light is good enough, so you can see what’s going on.

Water marks and stains are always a clue to where the leaks are

Water marks are a sure sign of leakage, and it’s here that you start with the clues, and a tangible source of trouble won’t be far away. Once you find the source it’s always good to get in touch with a professional roofer. Don’t try and tackle it yourself unless you know what you’re doing, or you have experience in this area. Mistakes can lead to bigger and costlier issues.

If you have a leak in your roof where the vent is then there’s going to be an issue with the materials, these are usually metal or plastic. There’ll be problems with either cracks or seams depending on whether your pipes are made of either of these materials. A sealant can be used to stop this from getting worse until your roofer arrives.

Wall and Dormers

Look out for water stains, they should stick out like a sore thumb and not be too hard to find. You can repair them with a material known as caulk and you pick this up anywhere at a general hardware store. Remember, that if it’s bad, this is a temporary fix until you get in touch with a professional roofer.

Complicated Leaks

Anything really complicated shouldn’t be attempted at all, not even a temporary fix. Anything where there are loose slates or bricks, several holes, an issue with your roof flashing, or anything of this nature is a job for a qualified roofer.
